Food Pantry News: August 2018

Last month I told you about being invited to the ECIWCTU meeting (East Central Illinois Woman’s Christian Temperance Union).  It is a group of very nice ladies.

I enjoyed their meeting.  They made me feel very welcome.  They insisted I join them for lunch.  That is always a good thing especially since the meeting was at Yoders.  They gave me a large donation of canned goods for the pantry.

The pantry continues to be busy.  We are helping a new person who moved to town.  We are helping him until he gets his first pay check.  He appreciates everything people are doing for him to help him get on his feet.

The pantry is low on cereal, toilet tissue, Kleenex and toilet articles like shampoo, deodorant, tooth paste and tooth brushes.  As always, “thank you” for supporting our outreach project.

News from God’s Closet July 2018

June has been a busy month in God’s Closet. We have received many large clothing donations as well as donations of kitchen items. A coffee maker went out the same day that it came in!
We had a request for boy shoes for ages 10 to 12. Howard and I have had a great week this month with two of our great grandchildren: Jack who is age 4 and Olive Elaine Ramsey from Tulsa, Oklahoma. We all loved playing at Eberhard Park!

We look forward to the Arthur fire-works. May God bless all of you at AUMC!

Food Pantry News July 2018

It is difficult to think of something new each month and then I remembered an interesting phone conversation I had with

Norma Taylor.  She is a member in a group called ECIWCTU (East Central Illinois Woman’s

Christian Temperance  Union).  She had contacted the Visitors Center and wanted to donate food to a food bank.  Long story short,  we connected and she wanted to hear about our outreach activities.  So I proceeded to tell her about  how God’s Closet provides clothing and household items, school supplies in the fall and winter coats, etc in the winter.  Then I explained to her how our food pantry provides food  tofamilies plus delivers 65 Thanksgiving boxes within the community.  I also told her about Wednesday night Community Meals. We as a congregation are trying to answer God’s call to feed the hungry and help those in need because as Pastor Bruce says “because Jesus asks us to!”  So I am going to their meeting on July 2nd to accept their donation of canned goods.    I am anxious to hear about other projects they support.

I also receive a large donation of salmon, tuna, clam chowder soup, raisins and breakfast bars.  I don’t understand where it comes from exactly.  It is marked “emergency meals” and Andy Bernius shares it with us.  I have this food in the pantry as well as on the table at the community meal.

As always “thank you” for supporting our outreach projects.  The pantry is in need  of shampoo, men’s deodorant and toilet paper.

Ecclesiastes 8:15
“So I commend the enjoyment of life, because there is nothing better for a person under the sun than to eat and drink and be glad.
Then joy will accompany them in their toil all the days of the life God has given them under the sun.”

Good morning!

I hope that everyone’s week has been going well!… I also hope you have had a chance to enjoy some time at the Moultrie-Douglas County Fair. The fair is a great place to spend time with family and meet up with friends… and sometimes- you might see friends or acquaintances that you haven’t seen in awhile as well. The fair can also be quite nostalgic as it brings back memories from past years – whether is be from our childhood or our favorite visits….

And after the fair is over for the week – there is another chance to spend time with family and friends! The Vine Street Christian Church will be hosting its outdoor movie night on Monday, July 16th. They will be showing the movie, “Wonder.” Bring your lawn chairs, golf cart or walk on over to watch a movie under the stars…

If you haven’t already, be sure to look through the binder when you are in church this Sunday or any other time this week. Pastor Bruce will be beginning the “Disciples Fast Track Bible Study,” on Sunday, August 12 at 4:00 pm. Disciple Fast Track Bible study is for busy people who want a comprehensive overview of the Bible from Genesis through Revelation.

It consists of two twelve-week courses, one for the Old Testament and one for the New Testament.

There is absolutely no prerequisite except a desire to learn about God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit and God’s Covenant of Salvation.

Disciple Fast offers a working knowledge of the Bible, but is focused as much on transformation as information.

There is some preparation required, but a very manageable 3-5 chapters a day, and there are no tests! The class consists of a

brief opening video, and then discussion of the theme and theme and information in the study. The focus is not merely knowledge,

but how that knowledge of the Bible impacts our daily lives.

Our Sunday afternoon small group wants to invite you to join us in this adventure, which will begin August 12 at 4:00 pm in the third floor lounge.

If you’d like to join us, sign up in the binder or call the office at 543-3159. Please sign up by July 22.

ARTHUR UNITED METHODIST CHURCH WEEKLY EMAIL

April 29, 2018

I waited patiently for the Lord;
he turned to me and heard my cry.
He lifted me out of the slimy pit,
    out of the mud and mire;
he set my feet on a rock
and gave me a firm place to stand.
He put a new song in my mouth,
a hymn of praise to our God.
Many will see and fear the Lord
and put their trust in him.

May 2018 News from God’s Closet

We have had a busy month with many large donations of bedding, pillows, blankets, sheets, several afghans and place mats coming in. Many of these donations left the closet pretty fast!

We also have had several donations of kitchen items such as dishes, silverware, glasses, pitchers, pots and pans, coffee pots and dish towels. If anyone has items in their kitchen that they do not use, we would be happy to “pass it on” to others.

Spring is on the way and we are in need of spring and summer clothing for children from birth to teenager. When this type of clothing gets donated, it goes out fast and the parents and children are so happy to receive the donations!

We thank everyone who has donated to the Closet so that we can continue to help others. God bless all!

In His Service,
Iris Ramsey

Food Pantry News for May 2018

The pantry continues to be busy. This month someone donated several packages of beef liver. I learned the lesson that people either love it or can’t stand it. There seems to be no middle ground when it comes to beef liver! When asking families if they liked liver, I received many “funny” faces but also big smiles from those who love it.

I also received a large donation from Astoria. Everyone loves the fragrant items they donate to us.

I would like to thank all those who donated cereal and other items last month. I now have a nice variety of cereals to pick from. This month I am in need of toilet tissue, Kleenex, shampoo, both women’s and men’s deodorant and soup.

As always, thank you for supporting our outreach project!

In His Service,
Jill Strawn
