SPECIAL MESSAGE FROM OUR PASTOR BRUCE WEIMAN
REGARDING THE COVID19 VIRUS

Due to Governor Pritzker issuing a “Shelter in Place” for Illinois starting Saturday, March 25 through April 30,  all CHURCH gatherings have been suspended. After then, we will re-evaluate and do look forward to worshiping together in person soon.  For now, we are holding Worship via Facebook Live. Online Worship is on Sunday at  9:00 am. We still continue to pray together as a congregation at 5:30 pm. Pastor Bruce has also been online via Facebook Live in the evenings at 9:30 pm.

Due to the corona virus making its appearance in our town, it is with heavy hearts that we feel we must suspend serving Wednesday Community Meals for the next two weeks. This decision has not been taken lightly, but with much prayer and concern for all our friends we have served over the years. We feel that we are unable to assure non-contact among our diners, even when we are only serving take-out, and our staff. Although this gives us great sorrow, we feel it is the only responsible course of action at this time. After two weeks, we, like so many others, will be reevaluating conditions, always with the goal of starting again as soon as it is safe to do so.

If you need to visit the food pantry, please call the church office at 543-3159. If nobody answers, please leave a message and someone will return your call. You may also send an email to arthurunitedmethodistchurch@gmail.com. We ask that you do not have any flu or any other symptoms of illness when you visit.

WE CONTINUE TO ACCEPT YOUR GIFTS FOR OUR MINISTRIES

Although it seems indelicate to include, we do need to remind ourselves that our ministry goes forward, and as such your offerings are still important. We are reminded that our offering is a giving of ourselves toward the ministry of caring for the least, a paying forward, if you will, and not payment for services rendered. Through your continued offering we are able to provide things that few others can: spiritual support, continued spiritual growth in creative ways, and a place where needs can be met. Offerings can be hand delivered, mailed, or sent through our on-line donation site that can be found on our web page and Facebook.

Please be in prayer for us, and for all our nations as we struggle through this time. We will persevere. We will have opportunities for spiritual growth as time goes on, and will communicate how that will happen as they become available. Most of all, let us be patient and loving toward one another, and encourage one another in all ways.

YOUTH MINISTRY

AUMC has a great youth ministry. During the school year, every Wednesday evening from 3:30 – 5:00 pm is our K-5 Youth program. Our leaders walk down to the school to pick them up and bring them back to the church where they are served a snack, sing some songs, learn a Bible story and often do a craft. At 6:00 pm on Wednesdays, our Junior High Youth gather together for lessons and a movie. On Sunday evenings, our Jr/Sr. High youth meet at 6:00 pm and our Junior High girls meet at 6:30 pm. Contact the church at 543-3159 if you would like to know more about our youth programs. During the youth year, our youth get involved in service projects and fundraisers.

What We Believe

Some of our folks have mentioned that people are asking about United Methodist Doctrine. They might ask where we stand on a variety of issues. This is wonderful, and I am always happy and eager to talk about these questions of our faith and tribe. If you have these questions, or are talking with someone else who does and are unsure how to respond, don’t hesitate to call me.

One of the interesting things is that we are not a very doctrinal denomination. We have no Augsburg Confession as the Lutherans do, or Westminster Catechism like the Presbyterians, or Papal Encyclicals as the Catholics. There is no one set of systematic beliefs we are required to adhere to. In a sense, we are the First  Amendment of the Protestant denominations: our members are free to harbor a wide variety of  beliefs.

Our “doctrine” is brief and simple. We believe in Jesus as the Son of God; in the salvation he brings through his life, death and resurrection; in the new life he bestows through the Holy Spirit. These are basic to just about all Christian congregations. In the details, we aren’t as specific.

We do have guiding documents, such as Wesley’s sermons, the Articles of Faith, the Social Principals and such, but we do not require absolute adherence to every word of them for people to be members of our congregations or worshiping communities. You can read these documents by going to the United Methodist website: www.umc.org. In the top bar there is a link to                “What We Believe.

Wesleyan doctrine and theology have always been very practical. Our faith and practice of it is both personal and social, and not historically divisive. We seem to be able to get along with fellow Methodists who are liberal and conservative, marchers and thinkers, dreamers and doers. We have never thought that unity meant uniformity. Wesley would say, “In essentials, unity; in  non-essentials, liberty; and in all things, charity.” If you ever have any questions, please feel free to come see Pastor Bruce Weiman.

Sunday Worship at AUMC

8:00-8:45 a.m. Early Service

The Early Service at AUMC is a traditional format for worship.  We sing traditional hymns, accompanied by a wonderful pipe organ. Although the service itself is a bit more formal, the atmosphere is relaxed and friendly.

10:00-11:00 a.m. Worship

This service has the best of traditional worship along with a twist of contemporary!  Our praise team and praise band along with talented musicians elevate the worship experience through music, which includes not only contemporary songs, but hymns and a traditional choir. Nursery is available at this service, as well as children’s church, where the children have their own twist on worship.

Adult Sunday School-Second Floor Lounge

Taught by: Pastor Weiman

We are currently tackling the book of Genesis. Every Biblical concept and theme has its beginning in the book of Genesis, and there we hear and see the salvation of God beginning to work in the lives of His people. Often this book is the one people begin to read, and quickly get bogged down. We will open the meaning and wonder of this love letter from God, and explore the “who” and “why” of creation, the marvelous covenant (sacred agreement) God made with our ancestor Abraham, how God worked in the lives of Abraham’s descendants, and the most wonderful story of Joseph (which is about a lot more interesting things than just a technicolor dream coat!)
